Mary Murray

Mary Murray
(Mill Girl)

Mary was born in Scotland about 1810 to Simeon and Mary Murray. She worked as a milliner by trade. After migrating to the United States she may have worked in the cotton mills of Lowell. Lowell bank records indicate that a cotton spinner named Mary M. Murray had a savings account there in 1834; a Mary Murray, also a spinner, had savings accounts there in 1841 and 1842 as well.

We do know that Mary Murray was a passenger on the Brooklyn from New York to San Francisco in 1846, with Samuel Brannan's Mormon pioneer company. She died in San José, California on January 18, 1849 at the age of 39.
